Celebrity couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore today announced a new campaign called "Real Men Don't Buy Girls" to help stop the practice of child sex slavery, particularly in the U.S. Their strategy, they explained, is to hit at profiteers by stifling demand. They spoke at a press conference organized at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting in New York City.
According to Kutcher, "there are more slaves in the world today than ever before. There are currently 27 million human slaves."
Demi Moore said they hope to "raise widespread awareness and acknowledgment of this issue in hopes of changing the cultural stereotypes that are allowing children to be sold for sex."
Kutcher demonstrated passion, raising his voice during the Q&A to emphasize that while it takes courage to stand up to child sex trafficking, it comes down to basic human decency and caring.
Kutcher then participated in a CGI panel discussion, titled "Democracy and Voice: Technology For Citizen Empowerment and Human Rights" which can be viewed at: http://www.clintonglobalinitiative.org/ourmeetings/2010/meeting_annual_multimedia_player.asp?id=21&Section=OurMeetings&PageTitle=Multimedia
The Demi and Ashton Foundation confirmed a commitment to CGI to help eliminate child sex slavery worldwide through an initiative that uses technology to disrupt trafficking online. More information is available at: http://www.clintonglobalinitiative.org/commitments/
